Dorcas Umaru is a multimedia journalist, set to graduate with her Master of Arts in Journalism from Hofstra University. Originally from Lagos State, Nigeria, she brings a vibrant passion for storytelling, entertainment, and cultural reporting shaped by her international academic and personal experiences.
During her time at Hofstra, Dorcas has worked as a field reporter for WRHU 88.7 FM, a station with over 10,000 listeners, where she covered local stories ranging from politics to community events. She also served as an entertainment reporter and anchor for Newsline, a half-hour radio news broadcast.
Her dedication to impactful journalism earned her the Best Spot News award from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System for her coverage of former Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to Long Island addressing business leaders during the 2024 election season. She also received the Content Excellence award from WRHU and was a finalist for the Press Club Media Award.
Dorcas holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a concentration in Broadcasting from Covenant University in Ogun State, Nigeria. There, she served as Assistant Welfare Director for the Covenant University Communication Students Association. Known for her charisma and leadership, she was awarded “Most Social Female” for four consecutive years and earned the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award in her third year.
From a young age, Dorcas loved speaking publicly and presenting in front of audiences, a passion that naturally transitioned into her career in media. She aspires to become a leading entertainment journalist with a focus on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. Outside of journalism, she enjoys attending church, swimming, cooking, watching movies, and spending quality time with her family.
